Curriculum Overview

Our Approach to the Curriculum

This year we have taken a different approach to deciding what we are learning. During the Summer term we asked the children what they would like to learn and we have adapted our planning to suit their interests. Our approach is Topic based. We believe that linking subjects together under a common theme gives learning in the classroom a context, and motivates the children. Therefore, Science, Geography and History content is divided into a ‘cycle’ of topics. Wherever possible, English is linked to the topics. Some areas of the curriculum will not fit the topic outline and will therefore be taught discretely. In Years 1 to 6 the topics are planned on a two year cycle, due to the mixed year nature of our class structure.

In addition to English and Mathematics, children are taught to develop their skills, understanding and creativity in Science, Computing, History, Geography, Design Technology, Music, Art, Physical Education and Religious Education (which is based on the locally agreed syllabus). Additionally, French is taught from Year 2 onwards. All children in Key Stage 2 will have an opportunity to learn to play an instrument, this year Year Four will learn to play the flute.
