week beginning 29th January

In phonics we learned all the different ways that the 'igh' sound can be made - igh = right, fright, night, ie = pie, tie, y = my, fly, sky, try, i = find, kind, behind, i_e = kite, bite,

7 children from Y1 took part, alongside 8 Y2s, in the Avocet Academy gymnastics competition on Friday morning - well done to all of them.

The highlight of our week was, of course, our trip to Colchester Zoo. We had a great day and managed to cram lots in to our time there. We saw lots of different animals of course, amongst the favourites were the penguins and meerkats which we have been learning about. Everyone, who wanted to, managed to feed both the elephants and giraffes. We had a ride on the train and took part in an education 'explore' session where the children were able to touch and feel lots of different animal artefacts such as skulls, horns, hides, skins, feathers and shells. The session fitted in perfectly with the work we have been doing in class on 'opposites'.
